Mary Chapman

Member Nominated Trustee

I am Mary Chapman, a recently appointed member-nominated Trustee. I am very pleased to renew my connection with the British Tourist Boards after more than forty years working in other contexts. It brings me full circle from the moment in 1970 when I joined the British Tourist Authority as a graduate management trainee. Following six years in a variety of marketing roles in England, Scotland and overseas offices, I left to pursue a career in the private sector.

This culminated with twelve years as Marketing Director/Personnel Director/General Manager of companies within the L’OREAL group. I was drawn back to the public sector by the challenge of establishing the Investors in People Standard and then in 1998 became Chief Executive of the Institute of Management, leading it to achieve its Royal Charter and creating the chartered professional body for managers.

Since 2008 I have served as a non-executive board member for public organisations including the Royal Mint Ltd, the National Lottery Commission, the Gambling Commission and Brunel University London. I chaired the Institute of Customer Service from 2009-15, was a trustee of the Girls’ Day School Trust for 10 years and recently completed an appointment as Chair of the Audit Committee of the Archbishops’ Council of the Church of England.

My current appointments are as Chair of the General Chiropractic Council and a Non-Executive Board Member of the Insolvency Service.

Throughout my life I have enjoyed learning. I hold a BA (Hons) in French and German from Bristol University; the diploma of the Chartered Institute of Marketing; a diploma in Business Management from the Centre Europeen d’Etudes Permanentes; and the diploma in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors. I have been awarded an honorary doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University and an honorary fellowship from Brunel University. I am looking forward to learning a great deal more about pensions.
