Why have a pension?

Retirement may seem like a long way off, but everyone needs money for when they stop working – so joining a pension scheme is important. A pension is a regular income that you get in retirement, which is paid for the rest of your life.

The Pension Act 2008 introduced automatic enrolment for most employees. It is now compulsory for employers to automatically enrol their eligible workers into a pension scheme. The employer must also pay money into the scheme. Automatic enrolment is being phased in and by 1 February 2018 all UK employers should offer a workplace pension.

New employees of VisitScotland are still able to enrol into the BTB Pension Scheme. New employees of VisitBritain and Visit England are being enrolled in a new DC scheme as from 1 April 2017. VisitBritain members who ceased accrual as at 31 March 2020 have also enrolled in a new DC scheme from 1 April 2020.

As from 6 April 2016 there is also a new simplified State Pension for anyone who reaches their State Pension Age after that date.
